Keene veterans memorial celebration is May 28
The community is invited to the 141st annual Keene Veterans Memorial Celebration on Sunday, May 28 complete with a special church service, lunch, and noon parade.
At 9:30 a.m., Veterans Memorial Church Service will be held at Keene United Methodist Church with featured veteran speaker Tim Obarow of Coshocton. In 1973, Obarow joined the U.S. Air Force and served as an aircraft mechanic with the 100th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing and then the 9th SRW. During his time of service, Obarow was privileged to work on the Lockhead U-2 and SR-71 in their reconnaissance roles. He was honorably discharged in 1977 at the rank of staff sergeant. Obarow is the grandson of immigrant Russian and German heritage. His father was a combat engineer in the European theatre of World War II. His older brothers served in the United States Air Force and Army respectively. His stepson, Chris Armato continued the family tradition of military service as a US Marine serving in the Gulf War, Somalia and Iraq. Tim and his wife Michele are currently serving with Missionary Maintenance Service in Coshocton.
The Keene United Methodist Women will serve a lunch from 10:30 a.m. until noon in the church fellowship hall. The Veterans Memorial Parade in Keene will start at noon Sunday and be led by the Grand Marshal Larry Endsley, Walhonding Rube Band, and the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office. Endsley of the Keene area has been a longtime master of ceremonies and supporter of the parade. The Keene Memorial Day Parade, held since 1882, is recognized as the second oldest continuously held Memorial Day Parade in Ohio. Members of the Warsaw American Legion Post 634 will give a 21 Gun Salute at both cemeteries and the Veterans’ Monument in Keene.
