L. Blair Porteus
COSHOCTON – L. Blair Porteus, 93, completed his life on this earth on Sunday, February 5, 2017 at Windsorwood Place. He was born November 17, 1923 in Coshocton to the late Leslie K. and Frances Iola (Blair) Porteus.
Blair was a 1941 graduate of Coshocton High School and shared his passion for animals and agriculture as a lifelong 4th generation farmer and in his volunteer community leadership opportunities. Among those were as an original member of both the South Tuscarawas Volunteer Fire Department and the Coshocton Area Feeder Calf Improvement Committee, a local 4-H advisor for 40 years with the Winner 4-H Club and induction into the Ohio 4-H Hall of Fame, serving over 30 years on the Frontier Power Company Board of Directors, service on the Coshocton County School Board, the OSU Extension Advisory Committee, Coshocton County Memorial Hospital Board, Coshocton Co. Farm Bureau, and a 75 year member of the Franklin Grange.
He displayed an affinity for John Deere tractors, Angus cattle, and was passionate in his responsibility as a steward of the land he farmed. He was a faithful servant of his Lord as a member of the Coshocton Presbyterian Church, serving as an Elder, Deacon, Trustee, mentor and friend in faith, and often his greatest gift was his example as a quiet and gracious man of few words, but exemplary of a loving, caring, and devoted brother, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend.
He is survived by three sons, Brent R. (Tami) Porteus of Coshocton, Knox A. (Beccy) Proteus of Coshocton, and Neal A. (Ruth) Porteus of Worthington. Grandchildren, Amy L. Porteus and Beth A. (Cole) Mullen of Coshocton. William B. (Lauren) Porteus, Carly B. and Warren Luke Porteus all of Worthington, and Brian R. (Lindsey) Porteus of Westerville. Elizabeth G. Porteus of Coshocton and Lauren J. (Sean) Albertson of Boise, Idaho. Three great grandchildren, Leslie M. and Blake R. Porteus, and Rylee L. Mullen, with Baby Mullen and Baby Porteus on the way. Also a niece and many nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janette E. (Rinner) Porteus, whom he married August 28, 1955, she died June 2, 1981. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Grace Buxton, Lois Wells, and Irene Buxton, and his daughter-in-law, Debra (Croft) Porteus.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 10, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary of the Coshocton Presbyterian Church 142 N 4th St. Coshocton, OH 43812 with Rev. Jonathan Carlisle officiating. Burial will follow in the Franklin Cemetery. Visitation is Thursday, February 9, 2017 from 4-8 p.m. at the Fischer Funeral Home in Warsaw and one hour prior to the service at the church.
