Library is hosting story time in the parks
The Coshocton Public library is having special story time’s in the parks throughout the county this summer. Everyone is encouraged to bring a blanket or chairs and enjoy some stories, songs, and activities. The programs are every other Thursday from 6:30-7 p.m.
The children played games and listened to a story about being kind at Burt Park in West Lafayette on July 13. Keelie Williams, youth services assistant from the Coshocton Library, gave examples of treating each other with kindness.
“Our summer reading theme All Together Now is working on inclusivity,” she said. “We focus on children and one way to be inclusive is to be kind to others. I don’t think you are ever too young to learn to say thank you or open doors for people you see, just treat them kindly. The first story was ‘Tomorrow I’ll be Fine.’ Tomorrow I’ll be kind. I’ll be helpful, patient, gentle, honest, generous, grateful, and kind. I know my colleagues like to do different songs. ‘Bread and Butter’ is a song I like to do at the schools, and I thought I would incorporate it into my story time at the park.”
Williams gave examples of treating people with kindness, “Sophia was being kind by helping me today. Harper your shoes are so pretty, I wish I had them. Atlee you bring me joy every time I see you. Whenever you talk to someone, try to say their name. Maybe we can’t solve their problems, but what we can do is be kind. Atlee and Sophia are regulars here, but a couple of children were new. It was awesome to see some babies. Anyone up to the age of about 13 can come. You don’t have to sign up, just show up. We read a couple books and have various activities depending on the ages. The younger ones really like the parachute, and we do little games that sort of keep them engaged. I see that a lot of the kids like to do run around games. We have different things like scavenger hunts that they really enjoy. Just come whenever you can.”
The children played a game called Land or Sea and rolled the dice to see what animal they could be. Addie pretended to be a cheetah and Henry was a parrot.
“Every other week we go to different parks in the different communities,” Williams said. “The next one will be in two weeks on July 27 at River View Community Park in Warsaw. It helps to get out into the community especially Warsaw since it doesn’t have a library close by.”
The remaining story times in the park will be held July 27 at River View Community Park in Warsaw; Aug. 10at Clary Gardens; Aug. 24 at River View Community Park in Warsaw; Sept. 7 at Burt Park in West Lafayette; and Sept. 21 at Clary Gardens.
