Local Bounty update

| May 1, 2014

Good Morning LB shoppers:  We have new plants on the porch and great things happening in the store.  Get out of the rain, come see us!

Upcoming Cookie/Cake Decorating Classes

Katie Hultz is continuing her series of cookie/cupcake/cake decorating classes with two more classes in May. On Tuesday, May 6 she will have a Mother’s Day Cupcake Bouquet ($20) and on Tuesday, May 20 she is having a *cake* decorating class ($35). Both are from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Local Bounty. Sign-up sheets are at Local Bounty too. All class supplies will be provided.

Did you know?

Local food supports local farmers. The American family farmer is a vanishing breed – fewer than 1,000,000 people (less than 1%) of Americans claim farming as a primary occupation. By buying locally, the middleman disappears and the farmer gets full retail price, in turn helping farmers continue to farm.” – dosomething.org

Local food builds community. By getting to know the farmers who grow your food, you build understanding, trust and a connection to your neighbors & your environment. The weather, the seasons and the science of growing food offer great lessons in nature and agriculture. Visiting local farms with your friends and your family brings that education and appreciation to the next generation.” – dosomething.org

Updates from our vendors:

Enrico’s Hot Peanuts

Happy spring, everyone! BBQ season will be starting, and what better way to begin those summer outings than with a cold beverage and bowls of Enrico’s Hot Peanuts to keep the troops happy until the main course comes off the grill. We mix roasted and salted Virginia peanuts with fresh garlic and red chilies to give our nuts a flavorful spice that will slowly warm your mouth and lips. Eat the whole chili peppers if you want them hotter. There are a few bags of our Easter mix available yet. A sweet and spicy mix of Enrico’s peanuts, pretzels and M&M’s sure to please. Get one at the Local Bounty today! Thanks to all for your support!

Flying Pig Farm

We’ve stocked the cooler with sprouts and baked fresh granola. Granola will keep at least two weeks so take some home today! Pick up some jam, jelly or fruit butter. It goes great with the many fresh bread offerings at Local Bounty!

Hillbippie

Did you ever wonder what “hillbippie” means?  Well, it is a word coined by my family to descried my husband, the ‘hillbilly’ and myself, the ‘hippie’.  Put them together and you guessed it, hillbippie!  This week in the store I will have Rustic French Baguettes which make a wonderful garlic bread.  Focaccia will also be available.  Full Wheat Bread is a new 100% whole wheat flour bread, it has Mullet Apiaries honey in it too, great for sandwiches.  I am still working on a gluten-free loaf, please stay tuned.  Thank you for shopping local!

Keene Creek Farm

This week we will restock the cooler with our freshly picked baby bloomsdale spinach and our cage-free brown eggs. Our pork supply is running a little slim, but we will be fully stocked in June. Right now our pastured pork cut options include: ham steaks (great on the grill), brats (mild Italian, fresh bratwurst and cheese), little piggies, breakfast sausage (bulk and patties), hocks and a few packs of peppered bacon. Our re-packaged dip mixes are selling well. Marissa will be working at Local Bounty Friday (10-2) and will make up a snack mix for you to sample using the ranch seasoning mix. It’s so good you won’t be able to keep your fingers out of it. Pizza dough mixes are always a good seller too – available in whole wheat and white. Many thanks for all your continued support.

Millcreek Homestead

There’s no place like home…  There’s no place like home…  Our family returned Saturday from our awesome adventure in Zambia, Africa.  We are so glad to be back to our family and friends – we really missed you!  I’ll be working at LB next Thursday afternoon (May 8), so stop in and say “hi”.  I’ve already been back to work in my soap room.  Soap is curing and withing 3-4 weeks, everything should be restocked.  The whipped shea butter shelf is full and I just finished putting on the label for a new lotion bar:  Chocolate Mint.  It is made with organic cocoa butter, organic coconut oil, beeswax, and is scented with peppermint essential oil.  (It smelled so good, it was hard not to eat it!)  Keep an eye out for more new products and new looks for old favorites in the weeks to come.  Thanks again for your continued support and a great big thank you to Marissa Mullett for keeping my shelves stocked for 4 months!  It’s good to be back.

Mullet  Apiaries

Hard to believe it is May already! Unfortunately, all this rain washes the nectar out of plants and the bees will have a rougher time finding nectar and pollen to bring back to the hive. Come back, sun! We have restocked our candles and wax blocks this week. Of course, our wild flower honey and creamed honey products are on the shelf and waiting for you. Here’s a suggestion for a light salad dressing to go on those greens that are beginning to show up at Local Bounty. Take a tablespoon of honey, two teaspoons of lemon juice and ¼ cup of plain Greek yogurt. Mix well. You may have to play a bit with the proportions to your taste, but it makes a great salad dressing! Please “like” Mullet Apiaries on Facebook!

Rolling Acres Nursery

We restocked our perennial (flowers, bushes, grasses, etc.) selection at Local Bounty for the week. We have lilacs, burning bushes, box woods, barberries, and more.

We appreciate your support, many thanks.
