Local swimmers advance out of sectional tournament

STEUBENVILLE – River View and Coshocton swimmers were among the 25 schools, and 354 swimmers that competed Saturday in the East District Sectional Tournament held at Steubenville High School.

The River View girls finished 11th overall, with the boys coming in third. The Coshocton girls were 16th, while the boys team finished second.

Several swimmers will be advancing to the district tournament at The Ohio State University on Friday, Feb. 19, to try and earn a state birth.

Placing for the Black Bears were Shawna Shroyer, ninth in the 200 freestyle (2:17.86), the 200 medley relay group of Shroyer, KJ Smailes, Kenzie Hudson, and Josie Fornara, eighth (2:17.01), and the 400 free relay group of Fornara, Madison Woolard, Smailes, and Shroyer, seventh (4:28.11) on the girls side.

On the boys side, Nate Cooper was third in the 50 free (24.03), and fourth in the 100 backstroke (59.23), Dylan Harsh, 11th in the 200 free (2:14.56), and 12th in the 500 free (6:15.56), Caleb Fischer, fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.38), and seventh in the 200 individual medley (2:26.80), Jonathan Helmick, sixth in the 100 free (55.68), Bryar Cox, eighth in the 100 back (1:07.32), the boys 200 medley group of Cooper, Fischer, Josh Bigrigg, and Helmick, third (1:50.71), the 200 free relay of Helmick, Cox, Bigrigg, and Cooper, third (1:39.17), and the 400 free relay of RJ Hammond, Cox, Bigrigg, and Helmick, fourth (3:49.70).

For the Redskins, Emily Casey finished 10th in the 100 butterfly (1:10.54), and is on the girls medley relay team of Suzi Simpson, Dezi Grizzard, and Carlie Williams that was 12th (2:37.61).

For the boys, Bryce Philabaum won the 100 back (53.87), and tied for first in the 50 free (22.92), Talon Babcock was fourth in the 50 free (24.06), and fifth in the 100 free (54.25), Cody McVay was second in the IM (2:13.61), and third in the 100 fly (1:03.47), Lukas Zitsch was eighth in the 500 free (5:55.81), the 200 medley relay of Philabaum, Zitsch, McVay, and Babcock was second (1:49.45), and the 200 free relay group of Corban Maust, Babcock, McVay, and Philabaum was third (1:38.48).
