Mark’s Musings – June 12, 2019
The Ridgewood Generals varsity baseball team made history and wrote themselves into the annals of Ridgewood sports in their historic and unprecedented run to the state championship game in Akron on Sunday evening. Although the Generals came up just one run short against Coldwater, the season and the memories will continue to live on for decades to come. For these young men, the coaches, the fans, their families and the greater West Lafayette community it will be something that they never forget. What a season and thanks for the memories! Congratulations Generals!
Now that the hot air balloon festival has concluded we head into the next round of June events – which brings the always fun and always tough and always challenging Indian Mud Run! No, I don’t know from personal experience nor do I plan to find out. You know the reasons – age, health insurance and all that stuff. It’s difficult to bang on a keyboard with a broken arm or something like that. Jeez. I will let the younger and shall we say, the more seasoned and skilled older ones (like FW) take their shot at this. The annual Indian Mud Run is slated for June 22 with lots of “fun” obstacles and challenges.
The community band provides a fun evening of great music and entertainment at the court square on Friday evenings throughout most of the summer. Go take a listen. You will enjoy it.
The annual corvette show was this past Sunday in Roscoe Village and a plethora of beautiful cars lined the streets on a nice Sunday afternoon. Hope you had the opportunity to cruise on by.
The Indians are now 10 and a half games behind the Twins – will they unload talent at the All-Star break? The question will be answered of course but it would be sad to see, especially with the game being in Cleveland this year. The Cubs and Brewers are continuing their neck and neck battle for the lead in the National League central division. It just so happens that the Reds and Pirates are in that same division. Not so good for them. The Tribe is only one and a half games behind in the wild card race but that is not good enough with the records of several other teams.
Could this be the year that is NOT a year that Golden State wins the NBA championship in a league that seemingly has become a two tier league – those that have really good teams and those that do not? The Raptors are poised to win the championship with a three to one game edge over the Warriors in game five on Monday evening, June 10. As I am writing this column early afternoon on Monday my bet is that it is still a series for the Warriors to lose versus the Raptors to win.
This weekend also brings the 45th annual Dulcimer Days Festival to Roscoe with events centered at and on the Central Ohio Technical College campus. The Sunday evening concert is always a wonderful venue and opportunity to hear some very talented musicians at Roscoe United Methodist Church – the concert begins at 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 16.
Sunday will mark the first Father’s Day without my dad. For mom, us four kids and everyone that will experience a dad’s absence for the first time, let’s remember all the good times. For us it was lots of cookouts and laughter as we gave dad sometimes serious gifts and sometimes just for fun gifts. I think we’ll grill hamburgers, have baked beans and make a batch of homemade ice cream in dad’s memory.
