Martin “Mick” Ray Baumgardner, 80, of Warsaw, passed peacefully on May 2, 2022, after a courageous journey with cancer.
Born Jan. 19, 1942, in Coshocton, he was the son of the late Jack and Gertrude (Mencer) Baumgardner. A graduate of Roscoe High School, he received both his Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education and a Master of Education Degree from Ohio University in 1968. He was a member of The Coshocton Church of the Nazarene.
He taught 31 years in the River View School District where he began his teaching career at Union High School and retired from River View High School in 1995. He was the Student Council advisor for 29 years at River View High School. He was privileged and proud to be the host advisor of State Conventions of The Ohio Association of Student Councils in 1969,1979, and 1994. He was a Life Member of the Ohio Education Association and the National Education Association. After retirement in 1995, he was a substitute teacher in Holmes, Coshocton, and Muskingum Counties for nearly 25 years. He was known as “Mr.Starfish” to the students and encouraged them to make a positive difference.
Mick is survived by his son Drs. Scott (Jennifer) Baumgardner of Bozeman Montana, daughters, Tara (Matthew) Baumgardner Buchanan of Hudson, Ohio, and Julie Ann (Baumgardner) Stein of Galena; brother, Mervin (Donna) Baumgardner of Ft. Myers, Florida, five grandchildren; Tyler Stein, Emma, Laszlo, and Megan Baumgardner, and Jaxson Buchanan, Aunt Jane Waggoner and Uncle Richard Baumgardner, nieces; Kelly Terebieniec and Kristy Baumgardner, cousins; Derrol and Dana Waggoner, Martin Mencer, Lori Mencer Danik, and Brent Baumgardner.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents Lily and Ralph Baumgardner, and Martin and Blanche Mencer.
Family and friends may attend visitation hours on Sunday, May 8, 2022 from 2-5 PM at Free Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service Monday. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Free Funeral Home in Coshocton on Monday May 9th at 11 a.m. with Pastor Steve Ward officiating. Burial will follow at Roscoe Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Mick requests that contributions be made to The Ohio Association of Student Councils.
