Maxine A. Kohler
Maxine A. Kohler, 94, passed away peacefully at Altercare Coshocton on Sunday, July 9, 2023.
Maxine was born in Roscoe on September 23, 1928, the daughter of Ralph and Mayme L. (Bantum) Dickerson. She was a 1946 graduate of Coshocton High School. She was born into and baptized at Grace Methodist Church.
Maxine married Robert G. Kohler on August 8, 1947, and joined the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Coshocton. She took great pride in belonging to their women’s groups and was the secretary for many years. Bob and Maxine were married 62 years and Maxine would say “I miss Bob every day. He kept me on my toes and life was never boring. We laughed a lot as he was always up to something.”
Maxine is survived by her sister, Ruth Dickerson, and children Robert (Kathy) Kohler, Timothy (Jennifer) Kohler, and Ruth Kohler of Coshocton, and Danny (Rhonda) Kohler of New Albany, 20 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren on the way.
As a child, Maxine loved going to the bookmobile and library. She enjoyed books that featured a heroine and especially those about history, the Depression era, and the 1800s. She liked nothing better than settling into her favorite chair with a cup of coffee, dark chocolate and a book. She passed along her love of reading to her children and grandchildren through her Christmas tradition of gifting books with a lovely handwritten inscription, and handmade Christmas ornaments. This tradition continues today.
Maxine’s bright, blue eyes would sparkle whenever she saw one of her grandchildren or great-grandchildren. She loved spending time with them talking about books, life, and love. She would beam with pride at hearing their adventures, and was quick to praise them and celebrate their every success.
Maxine worked in Roscoe Village from 1980-1992. She acted as a building tour guide and also trained new tour guides. She especially loved cooking on the open hearth, working in the doctor’s house and playing the role of schoolmarm. She loved sharing the history of her hometown and until her death was an avid follower of world events.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Lena Dickerson, and brother Stanley and his wife, Shirley Dickerson, and in-laws Ruth (Skip) Hurst, Beryl (Jack) DeRing, Mary (Clarance) Watts all of Newcomerstown, Jane (Bill) Worthington of Pleasant City, and Marilyn (Don) Atkinson of Newark, and granddaughter-in-law, Gina Kohler of Roanoke, Virginia.
Calling hours were held on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm at Given-Dawson-Paisley Funeral Home. A funeral service followed at 12:00 pm with Pastor Brian Kittner officiating. Burial was held at West Lawn Cemetery in Newcomerstown, Ohio.
