Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center hosts math competition
ZANESVILLE – A team of Mathletes® from Coshocton Junior High School recently captured second-place at the local Muskingum Valley Chapter MATHCOUNTS competition.
The Coshocton team members included: Isaiah Blanchfield, Zane Bryant, Kennedy Kittell, Sheldon Stotts, and Coach Diane Schlegel. The team from Rushville Middle School, Fairfield Local School District, won the competition, and the top individual award went to Collin Mahler from the Rushville team.
Hansel Holmes from Tri-Valley Middle School, Andrew Van Meter from Philo Junior High, Brendan Bernath from Bishop Fenwick School, and Alyssa Derry from East Muskingum Middle School will represent the chapter as individuals. The teams and individuals will now advance to the state competition in Columbus March 9.
The top four individuals from the state competition will represent Ohio at the 2019 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition in Orlando, Fla., May 12-13.
As a national math enrichment, coaching, and competition program designed to improve math skills among U.S. students, MATHCOUNTS prepares students for future career opportunities and success. More than six million students across the U.S. have participated in MATHCOUNTS programs.
The Muskingum Valley Chapter program was sponsored by the Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center, The Robert E. Fellers and Leona L. Fellers Foundation Trust, the Colgate-Palmolive Company, Cambridge Packaging, and APG Architects, LLC. Susan Larson, Gifted Education Coordinator, and Ruth Ware, Curriculum Consultant, for the Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center, provided leadership at the local levels of the MATHCOUNTS Competition Series.
