New World War II exhibit opening at museum
COSHOCTON – WWII–We Can…We Will…We Must! premieres at the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum Saturday, June 9 with a special reception from 5 to 6:30 p.m. This special exhibit features uniforms, medals, firearms, ordinances, an assortment of regulation supplies, trench art and propaganda posters demonstrating how the Second World War touched all aspects of American life. The reception is free and open to the public. Attendees are invited to wear period clothing of the WWII era.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s words, “We Can… We Will…We Must!” became ingrained into the American consciousness as he used them to inspire the nation to stand behind the war effort. A latecomer into the Second World War, the United States entered the conflict in 1941, after the Japanese launched a devastating surprise attack on the Hawaiian naval base at Pearl Harbor.
Everyday life was dramatically altered across the country as roughly 16 million Americans were called to serve. Food, gas and clothing were rationed. Communities conducted scrap metal drives. An efficient and resourceful war effort at home meant making it possible to quickly and efficiently build guns, ammunition, ships, planes and tanks for the Allies to succeed against the Axis powers.
Admission to the exhibit WWII—We Can…We Will…We Must! , which continues through Sept. 9, is $4 for adults and $3 for children. Sponsors are the West Lafayette Rotary, West Lafayette Lion’s Club and the Janusian Club. The Ohio Arts Council also helped fund this event with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.
The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, from noon to 5 p.m. The museum is located at 300 N. Whitewoman St., in Historic Roscoe Village. For information, contact the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum at 740-622-8710 or visit its website: jhmuseum@jhmuseum.org.
