New Year’s Eve ideas for your family

| December 27, 2020

Chances are that your plans for this New Year’s Eve may look very different from other years. But – that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the evening and ring in the New Year with fun for the whole family, even if you are making last minute plans.

If you feel comfortable to go out, Legacy Lanes and Shelby Theatres are both good options for early evening fun. Legacy Lanes will be open from noon to 10 p.m. that day and is offering a $49.95 special. This is for two hours of bowling for up to five bowlers. Shoes, a pitcher of pop and a large pizza are included in the package. You can check the Shelby Theaters’ Facebook page for times and movies.

If, like many people, you feel that staying home is a better choice for you, you can still have fun. Plan a New Year’s Eve party for your family and let your children help. Just because it is “just” the family doesn’t mean your party shouldn’t have all of the trimmings.

Give your children construction paper and let them create decorations for your party. Curling ribbon makes great streamers and it is a cheaper solution than buying streamers. Best of all, your kids can cut and curl the ribbons and help you hang them everywhere. Balloons are another inexpensive way to decorate your home.

Buy party hats and noise makers for your family. Kids love to celebrate and to be part of the celebration. Buy plastic “wine” or “champagne” glasses and let your kids drink from the fancy cups that night. Mix a punch just for them in your punch bowl and see how excited they get.  Ask each child to choose a special snack for the party and set everything out in pretty bowls, just like you do when you have a big party.

For entertainment, play hide and seek with your kids or break out some board games. Create a scavenger hunt through your home. Play other party games and have small prizes (a bag of mixed candy works well.) for the winner to choose from. The internet is full of games for all ages, from charades to stacking cups to minute to win it races that you can do with little to no prep.

Once the games are over, crowd into your living room for a family movie. Consider letting the kids bring sleeping bags, blankets and pillows into the living room and sleeping there all night. If anyone is still awake at midnight, blow your horns and pop your poppers to celebrate the New Year. Don’t forget plenty of hugs and kisses to welcome in 2021!
