Odis dansbyNEWCOMERSTOWN – Odis “Odie” Dansby, Jr., 79, Newcomerstown, passed away at his Newcomerstown residence late Sunday morning, December 30.

Odis was born in Newcomerstown on October 4, 1933, a son of the late Odis Dansby, Sr., Newcomerstown, who died in 1977, and the late Frances F. Clayton Dansby, Newcomerstown, who died in 1994. He was a graduate of Newcomerstown High School, class of 1952. Odis then served a tour of duty in the Army. He was a member of the 20th Infantry Regiment and was stationed at Fort Ord, California during the Korean War. He returned to civilian life in Newcomerstown in 1956 and was employed as a custodian with the former Heller Brothers Tool Company, Newcomerstown for over 43 years before his retirement in 1997. He was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church, Newcomerstown, and a life member of both the Thomas Montgomery Post # 431, Newcomerstown American Legion, and the AMVETS Post # 36, Coshocton. He also belonged to the L.O.O.M. # 1337, Newcomerstown Moose Lodge.

Odie had a colorful sense of humor. He was a loving man with many funny stories and comments that made a lasting impression on everyone. Odie was a man full of compassion for others, always seeming to make others laugh and smile. He made each person he met feel special. The Newcomerstown American Legion became his second home, as he enjoyed his daily coffee and friends at the post. At the Legion, he enjoyed watching sports and engaging in conversations with his many friends. Odie was known for his collection of unique smoking pipes and his willingness to “gab” about anything. With his unique personality, no one was ever a stranger to Odie. A man with a big heart for others, he was a wonderful friend, father, and grandfather who will be greatly missed in the Newcomerstown community.

In addition to his parents, Odis was preceded in death by his brother, Larry R. Dansby, Newcomerstown, who died in 1993, and a granddaughter, Ashley K. Dansby, Newcomerstown, who died in 1984.

He leaves to cherish his memories his daughter, Peggy Dansby, Newcomerstown, and his two sons, Michael and wife Alyse Dansby, St. Paul, Minnesota, and Brent and wife Claudia Dansby, Wadsworth. Also surviving are several grandchildren: Nicole Dansby, Newcomerstown, Alicia, Autumn, Chris, and Margaret Dansby, all of St. Paul, Will Dansby, Concord, California, Nathan Ash, Dublin, Ohio, Alicia Ash Bousquet, Orlando, Florida, and Natalie Ash Murphy, Long Grove, Iowa. He is also survived by five great grandchildren, his sister-in-law, Carol A. Dansby, Newcomerstown, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

To honor his wishes, his remains are to be cremated. Memorial services will be held in the Ourant Funeral Home on Saturday, January 12, 1:00 PM. Rev. Robert Sherrell will conduct the services. Friends will also be received in the funeral home, starting at 11:00 AM until the 1:00 PM memorial services. Burial will follow at West Lawn Cemetery, Newcomerstown, where military grave side services will be conducted by the Newcomerstown Veterans’ Honor Guard. The family is requesting that memorials be made in Odis’ name to the Trinity Baptist Church, in care of the Huntington National Bank, 100 West Main Street, Newcomerstown   43832
