Richard ‘Dick’ Edwin Unger
Richard “Dick” Edwin Unger, born on March 12, 1940, in Coshocton, Ohio, passed away peacefully at his home in West Lafayette, Ohio, on November 22, 2024. He was 84 years old.
Richard was a devoted husband to Wanda Grace Hardesty, whom he married on September 9, 1961. Together, they shared 63 wonderful years of marriage. He was a loving father to his children, Jane (Andy) Bachert, Julia (Tom) Boyer, and Dane (Jaime, fiancée) Unger, and a proud grandfather to Kristin Delaney, Andrew Bachert, Chelsey Unger, Paige Helbling, Morgan Unger, and Evan Unger. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren, Lily Delaney, Holly Delaney, and Carmen Helbling. Richard’s devotion to both his immediate and extended Unger family was evident in the cherished moments he shared with them, leaving a legacy of love and deep connection that will be fondly remembered by all.
Richard dedicated 34 years of his career to AEP, where he earned a reputation for hard work and commitment as a customer service representative. At the age of five, he was introduced to pigeon racing, which developed into a lifelong passion. The sport brought him both joy and lasting friendships, and he was a proud member of the American Racing Pigeon Union Incorporated. Richard also cherished attending his children’s and grandchildren’s dance recitals and sporting events. He was a keen bowler and avid sports fan and was deeply involved in his community as an active member of the Elks and the Eagles.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, William and Dova Unger, his brothers, Jim and Donald Unger, and his beloved daughter, Julia Boyer.
A mass in his honor will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Saturday, December 7th at 1:00 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at the Elks, located at 434 Chestnut St., Coshocton, OH, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Richard will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Memorial contributions can be directed towards St. Jude Children’s Hospital and Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Miller Funeral Home and Crematory is caring for the family.
