Road Runner Elite closes out season with second place

PICKERINGTON – The Road Runner Elite 18U travel softball team closed out their season with a second place finish at the Grand Finale Tournament in Pickerington on July 21 – 22. In the first pool game on Saturday, Kendyl Hatfield (John Glenn/Marietta) led the offense with four RBI’s on a single, double and triple against the Lancaster Kaos. Gina Fogle (Toronto/Wheeling Jesuit) went three for three with two doubles and a single and picked up two RBI’s. Bre Tetirick (John Glenn/Westminster) also had two RBI’s on a double and a single. Julianna King (Steubenville Big Red) allowed only three scattered singles to pick up the 11-2 victory on the mound. Megan Kelley (Indian Creek) scored twice with a single, walk and a stolen base and Madison Johnson (John Glenn) scored twice on two walks.

In the second pool game, Hatfield stayed hot at the plate rapping a two-run home run but the defense faltered allowing six unearned runs to take a 6-2 loss to the Stingrays. Riley Conkle (Coshocton) took the hard luck loss on the mound with King coming on in relief. The team bounced back in the third and final pool game against the KC Diamond Gems with Conkle earning the win in relief of King for the 7-1 victory. Conkle also led the team at the plate ripping a three run homerun in the first inning. Hannah Worthington (Tri-Valley) hit a double and scored, Claire Warschauer (River View) had two singles and scored, Kelley and Lauren Krystek (River View/Air Force) each had RBI singles.

On Sunday, the team began single elimination bracket play with an 8-2 victory over the Central Ohio Stampede. Josie Duncan (North Union) struck out seven and scattered five hits to earn the win on the mound. The team smacked three homeruns with Duncan hitting a three-run shot in the fifth inning. Kieran Johnson (Wheeling Park) ripped a two-run homer and a double, and Fogle had a solo shot and a single, scoring twice. Krystek had an RBI double, Worthington two singles with an RBI and Madison Johnson scored twice. In the next game versus Buckeye Heat Patton, Duncan continued her dominance on the mound scattering five hits to get the 7-1 victory. Conkle grabbed four RBI’s, with a home run, a single and a walk. Fogle rapped a double, Hatfield an RBI double, Madison Johnson two singles and Krystek scored twice to lead the offense. The team faced a tough Ohio Hawks team in the semi-finals and came away with an 8-2 win. With the bases loaded in the first, Warschauer ripped a hard single to right center which scooted past the fielder allowing three runs to score. Worthington followed with a single scoring Warschauer. Fogle rapped a two-run double in the second and Duncan stroked a solo homerun in the fourth to seal the victory. Duncan also earned the win on the mound in relief of King to send the Runners to the championship game against the Stingrays. Madison Johnson had three singles, Fogle a double and single, Hatfield an RBI double and Worthington an RBI single to lead the offense but nine runners were stranded on base as King suffered the 8-2 loss.

The team ends the season at 22-14-1. Tryouts for the 2019 season will be Sunday, Aug. 5 at the Muskingum University softball field from 3 – 5:30 p.m.
