Road Runner Elite team competes in Lewis Center
COSHOCTON – The Road Runner Elite 18U travel softball team competed in the Great American Premier Softball Showcase in Lewis Center Ohio.
In the first pool game the team lost 7-2 to the eventual third place team, Ohio Red. Taylor Gallentine (St. Clairsville) led the offense with a single and a two-run double. Kieran Johnson (Wheeling Park) singled and scored a run, and Kendyl Hatfield (John Glenn/Marietta), Riley Conkle (Coshocton), and Denise Young (Waterford) each had singles. Janessa Dawson (Tri-Valley) took the loss on the mound.
The team defeated the Ohio Emeralds 9-3 in the second pool game. Conkle ripped a two run homerun and Alexsa Hurd (Akron Field) smacked a single and a homerun and also picked up the victory on the mound. Gina Fogle (Toronto/Wheeling Jesuit) rapped a two run double and scored twice. Hatfield hit a two run single and Dawson picked up an RBI on a single.
In the third pool game against the Firecrackers from Pennsylvania, the team took a hard luck loss as they had the bases loaded in the final inning with only one out but failed to score the tying run and took the 5-4 loss. Lauren Krystek (River View/Air Force) went 3-3 at the plate with two singles, a double, a stolen base and scored a run. Dawson had two singles and an RBI. Shanna Reed (Toronto) and Hannah Worthington (Tri-Valley) each had a single and scored a run. Conkle and Kieran Johnson each had RBI singles and Madison Johnson (John Glenn) beat out an infield single. Hurd took the loss on the mound.
In the final pool game the team took an 8-2 loss to the Ohio Hawks Gold who ended up winning the tournament. Dawson took the hard luck loss on the mound as the team had some poor defensive play behind her. Gallentine hit a two run single to lead the offense. Kieran Johnson singled and scored, Madison Johnson walked and scored and Hatfield, Reed and Young each had singles.
After a blind draw for the single elimination tournament, the team faced a tough Lasers Blue team in their first bracket game Saturday night. It was a pitchers’ duel through the first three innings with Dawson on the mound for her second game of the day. The Runners scored first in the fourth inning after Fogle ripped a double and Dawson reached base on a throwing error which allowed Fogle to score. The Lasers offense erupted in the bottom half of the fourth scoring five. The Runners didn’t throw in the towel as Claire Warschauer (River View) started off the fifth and last inning by ripping a double and scoring on a Gallentine single. Krystek followed with her second single of the game but the team failed to score again and took the 5-2 loss to the eventual tournament runners up. Krystek also made two fantastic foul ball diving catches playing left field for the Runners.
