Robert Gaumer Slaughter
Robert Gaumer Slaughter, 72 formerly of Washington D.C. passed away peacefully Friday, June 16, 2023 at Oak Pointe Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Baltic, Ohio. Bob was born January 7, 1951 in Coshocton to the late Robert and Lois (Gaumer) Slaughter. Bob was a 1969 graduate of Coshocton High School, a 1972 graduate of Yale University, and received his juris doctor (cum laude) from Georgetown Law School in 1976.
Bob realized his love for politics while working for Congressman John Ashbrook during college. Upon graduation, Bob began his career as an entry-level staffer in the offices of his two home state senators, William Saxbe and Howard Metzenbaum.
Before being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, Bob was recognized and well respected throughout the Washington D.C. area for his extensive knowledge of governmental procedures and his inquisitive nature and interest in the oil and gas industry. In the late 70s to early 80s Bob was the energy advisor to Ambassador at large and Coordinator of U.S. – Mexican Relations, Robert Krueger, at the State Department in Washington D.C. Next, Bob worked for the Amoco Corporation as their senior representative in Washington D.C. During this period, he lobbied the Administration and the House and Senate on all major domestic and international initiatives affecting the petroleum industry and many in the chemical industry. In 2002, Bob became the president of National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA). In this position, Bob had extensive experience testifying before congressional committees on a host of sensitive and crucial subjects, including gasoline production and supply, the importance of the refining and chemical industries to the nation, facility security, and the most significant environmental initiatives. After retiring from NPRA, Bob joined the Washington based government relations consulting firm, Thomas Advisors, where he continued to use his extensive energy knowledge.
Bob was an avid reader and world traveler, spoke 5 languages and loved his Yale affiliation. He enjoyed a wide circle of friends, including several Presidents. Everyone wanted Bob as their partner when playing TRIVIA due to his extensive knowledge of history and other facts! Bob had a love for all animals especially Bernese Mountain Dogs as he raised two of them; Alex and Margie.
Bob is survived by his siblings: D. Lance (Mary) Slaughter of Lambertville, Michigan and Lisa (Joe) Akers of Coshocton; nieces: Brittany (Caleb) Berens and Alyssa (Matthew) Vickers; nephews: David (Kristi Osentoski) Slaughter, Andrew (Jessica) Akers, and Alex (Tida Keng) Akers. Also surviving are several cousins and great nieces and nephews.
Calling hours were held on Monday, June 26, 2023 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at Given-Dawson-Paisley Funeral Home. A Memorial Service was held at 1:00pm with Deacon Doug Mould officiating. Burial will followed South Lawn Cemetery.
Bob’s family would like to express their gratitude towards his caring and supportive friends in the Washington D.C. area, especially Tom Medaglia, Frank Verrastro and Kaye Winn. The family would also like to thank Oak Pointe Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and Community Hospice of New Philadelphia for their compassionate love and care.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Community Hospice of New Philadelphia, Ohio, Sacred Heart Catholic Church Coshocton, Ohio or the Coshocton County Animal Shelter & Humane Animal Treatment Association.
