River View High School juniors Lanie Nickerson and Gavin Guilliams are using their senior project to continue a community clothing drive originally started by Jodi Morrison.
Nickerson worked with Bobbi Rahn last year and Guilliams joined this year. Both will have one more year involved with the project.
Morrison was the mentor for this project from the 2016-2018 school years. It was stopped after Covid hit. In 2021 Amy Art-Johnson became the new mentor.
Nickerson and Guilliams started the collection process by putting boxes at the elementary, intermediate, and high school. Many people from the community brought clothes to the high school. Once the collection stopped, they had sorting days. A spreadsheet was created and the National Honor Society could sign up for community service hours by helping to sort. The music department helped them clean out the prop closet and donated clothes.
The clothing distribution will be held on Saturday, April 6 from 8 a.m. 4 p.m. at Roscoe United Methodist Church. Trash bags will be provided. The clothes are free, but there will be a jar for donations to the church.
Clothes remaining will be donated to Risen Thrift in Danville. Their sales from clothes go to addiction services.
Guilliams says of this project, “From one family to another.” Nickerson feels that “community means everyone” and Art-Johnson sums up the project by saying, “A selfless community is one that bonds together.”
