Senior center starts grocery shopping and delivery program
The Coshocton County Senior Center wants to spread the word about its new grocery shopping/delivery program for county seniors.
“Helping our seniors safely get to the grocery store has been a need around here for a while,” said Director Christy Neighbor. “We started slowly introducing this new program to our clients. The first week we took it to the housing facilities, the next week we posted it on Facebook. They really like it. It takes a minute to get used to it. I like the idea of Buehler’s partnering with the senior center. This is going to be a very good program. I don’t think a lot of people know that we are still interactive since the center is closed. This is geared toward people who don’t come in or use our home delivery program.”
Formerly seniors could receive help through Grocery Assistance, but they had to come to the senior center for lunch, use the transportation or use Meals on Wheels. With funding from the Older American Act anyone 60 or older can benefit from this new program.
With this new funding the senior center partnering with Buehler’s can take grocery orders over the phone, or by email and payment over the phone with their EBT card or debit/credit card. Also, their family member or caregiver can contact the senior center with the grocery order including payment information on behalf of the senior. Grocery orders can include supplies and medications as well.
“Drivers can actually help by delivering the order and taking the groceries inside,” Neighbor said. “They can email us a list or take a screenshot of the list or they can give the list to the driver, however they can get us their list.”
Contact the senior center to take advantage of this new program at 740-622-4852.
The intent of the Older American Act is to promote the dignity of older adults by providing services and supports that enable them to remain independent and engaged citizens within their communities. For information can be found on the National Council on Aging’s website at NCOA.org.
