Storm damage update
WEST LAFAYETTE – Local officials and public safety personnel continue to assess the impact left behind following flash flooding that occurred Tuesday night. As water recedes, there remains the possibility of heavy rain today. The National Weather Service will issue a flash flood warning should there be indication of heavy rain to impact West Lafayette and the surrounding area.
The evacuation shelter was closed at 9 p.m. on June 19 due to no further requests for shelter. The American Red Cross will continue to have a presence in the area to assist residents. There will be locations established for residents to take items for disposal.
The West Lafayette Fire Department is being supported by other County Fire Departments. The West Lafayette Police Department has transitioned to 12 hours shift in order to maintain a presence in the affected areas. Drivers are still urged to avoid the affected areas unless it is necessary for you to travel to those neighborhoods.
The EMA is coordinating a door to door damage assessment. The damage assessment will begin on Friday once water has receded and properties can be accessed. All damage assessment teams will be identified. More details about the damage assessment will be available later today. It is unclear at this time when that damage assessment will be complete.
Local officials would like to remind citizens about some safety concerns. Village water is safe to drink as flood waters did not get to the water well fields. Flood waters are not safe for consumption nor should citizens be swimming it the flood water unless it is an emergency situation. Do not operate gasoline powered pumps or other equipment inside of your home. This type of equipment must be well ventilated as the exhaust and carbon monoxide are very dangerous.
Local officials will be meeting to discuss the current situation and to determine what priorities exist. A press briefing may be scheduled later today. Information about press briefings will be posted on the West Lafayette and EMA social media platforms.
