COSHOCTON – The 42nd annual National EMS Week was celebrated May 15-21. In honor of all those who are there to help during emergencies, here are some tips provided by Terry S. Shroyer, education coordinator for Coshocton County EMS, that can help you assist emergency responders.

  1. Many people only have cell phones now and may not be able to find them quickly during an emergency. It might be helpful to consider keeping your landline just in case of an emergency or keep your cell phone on you at all times.
  2. Know the signs and symptoms of stroke and heart attacks. Time is so important in treating the patient for a good outcome. Learn CPR and what to do if someone is choking.
  3. Make sure your address is clearly marked on your mailbox. It’s important for EMS, fire and the sheriff’s department. There is nothing worse than not being able to find an address.
  4. Stroke is prevalent and life-threatening and 780,000 strokes are estimated to occur annually in the United States. Stroke is the third leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability. The longer a stroke goes untreated, the greater the chance of permanent neurologic damage. Rapid intervention is crucial in the treatment of stroke.
