Volunteers are essential to swimming lessons

COSHOCTON – Sheldyn Stewart, far right, is pictured instructing three young swimmers at swim lessons currently being held at the Lake Park Aquatic Center. Facing her are Zayda Pool and Sadie Dreher. Stewart and her sister are both lifeguards and decided to volunteer their time to help at lessons.

Swim lessons are run by volunteers and more are welcome to sign up to help at upcoming lessons scheduled for Warsaw’s pool. These classes are held in the mornings, July 22 – Aug. 2 (no weekends).

“We had to limit our registration of 1A (beginner swimmers) because of lack of volunteers, but people have really stepped up,” said Sher Alloway, swim lesson coordinator. “This is where we need volunteers the most. We like to only have two to three students per volunteer. They really need your attention at this level.”

You do not have to be an expert swimmer to volunteer. Certified instructors pass the students on to the next level after volunteers have worked with them on the fundamentals. “Anyone can do it and you will only be up to your knees in water,” Alloway said.

Volunteers also can be clipboard helpers or be assigned other duties.  For more on the local learn to swim program, including volunteering or signing up for lessons in Warsaw, visit saferkidsclub.com. You also can call or text Alloway at 740-202-0898.
