| January 29, 2025

Welch L. Sprague, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 83 on January 27, 2025, in Mount Vernon, Ohio. Born in Waterford, Ohio, to the late Rev. Don Leroy and Rita Arlene (Welch) Sprague, Welch lived a life full of love, kindness, and wisdom.

A dedicated educator and cherished leader in the River View school district, Welch was known for fostering growth and inspiring others. As a retired elementary school principal, his impact on countless students and teachers was immeasurable. He was a mentor and a steady guide, helping shape the future of education in the communities he served. With his strong faith and calm demeanor, Welch was cherished for his warmth, compassion, generosity, and easygoing nature by all who knew him.

Welch found joy in the simplest moments. He had a profound and inspiring love for his family, and whom he cherished above all else, and nothing made him happier than spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was an avid golfer, absolutely loved the game, and a member of both the Apple Valley and River Greens Golf Courses. When he wasn’t out on the greens, he enjoyed working on model trains, trying new restaurants, and making memories with his loved ones.

He is survived by his loving wife Mary Beth (Geese) Sprague, who he was married to for 61 years; his children Doug (Bonnie) Sprague of Enon Valley, PA, and Beth (Drew) Bialko of Johnstown, OH, and his grandchildren Allen (Stacy) Sprague, Matthew (Meghan) Sprague, and great-grandchildren Thomas and Adeline Sprague. He also leaves behind his sister, Judith (Carl) Gonzalez of Bellville, OH, along with nieces, cousins, friends, and extended family who will miss him dearly. Welch and his family resided in Fresno, Ohio for 48 years before he and his wife moved to Mount Vernon, Ohio. He was a member of the Fresno United Methodist Church in Fresno, Ohio, and the Gay United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon, Ohio. His faith guided him to support and uplift those around him with an open heart.

Welch was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Don and Rita Sprague, and will be remembered for his strength, wisdom, and unwavering kindness. His legacy of love, faith, and generosity will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 31, 2025, from 11:30 am to 2:00 pm at Given-Dawson-Paisley Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm with Pastor Dan Eggan officiating. Burial will be held in Fairview Cemetery in Fresno.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Welch’s memory to either Samaritan’s Purse, SAMARITAN’S PURSE DONATE or the American Junior Golf Association. AJGA DONATE/
